Strata Editions is an ongoing experimental photography project and store that presents collections of photobooks, photographic prints, and furniture designed in-house. Strata’s focused selections offer stories about the land and materials around us.

  • The West is a layered entry point for understanding contemporary photography: people can immediately recognize a photograph that was made in the West, whether it is stark and uncanny (like Susan Lipper’s Domesticated Land) or profuse and celebratory (like Carlos Jaramillo’s photographs of the charrería in Tierra del Sol).

It suggests questions about the land and our collective past, and how those things are rendered in the present: Jim Mangan’s The Crick, in which boys create their own alternate reality as old-time explorers of the Western ‘frontier;’ Cassandra Klos’s Mars on Earth, where she leads teams of mock-astronauts on simulated missions to Mars; and Matt Calarco’s physical manipulations of his personal photo archive of the West in False Summits.

It’s not easy, or truly possible, to get a rope around the theme of Western Contemporary. By bringing multiple perspectives into conversation with one another, we hope to represent the depth of current photographic explorations of the American West, and of the land itself.
