Born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, Kennedi Carter has garnered international acclaim for her work which highlights the aesthetics and sociopolitical aspects of Black life as well as the overlooked beauties of the Black experience: skin, texture, trauma, peace, love and community. Her work aims to reinvent notions of creativity and confidence in the realm of Blackness. Defined as “without inspection or appraisal,” Carter's work exemplifies the phrase "sight unseen." Her images approach and depict moments without judgement or preconceived notions of what constitutes memorable or worthy.

Kennedi recalls an interaction with a performer named Spy Boy, a Mardi Gras Indian whom she had met walking through the city one afternoon and later photographed in Tulane’s woods. “Do you know what Spy Boys do?” she recalls him asking. “We lead.” With the moon in the trees as if casting a natural spotlight on her new friend, she watched him perform, captivated by his power.

Archival pigment prints use refined pigment particles to create exquisite, high-resolution artwork. This printing method creates museum-quality artwork designed to last; ink and paper are critical elements in an archival pigment print’s life span.
